Reading
We enjoy reading for pleasure throughout the week in our book corner, in the classroom and at the library. We love taking books home from the library and changing them each week. We read as part of our guided reading lessons every day and enjoy reading our books to adults in school. We aim to change library books on Tuesday, but they can be swapped any day with a book from our book corner. Bug Club books will be changed every Wednesday unless otherwise notified. Please ensure all books are in school each day so that we can read 1:1 with your child when we have volunteers and staff available.
English
We began the Autumn term by exploring and writing independent sentences using the book 'Aaaargh Spider' by Lydia Monks. We then moved on to retelling the story 'Silly Suzy Goose'. To end Autumn 1, we wrote instructions about how to rescue a kite from a tree. Our focus was on ensuring that capital letters, finger spaces and full stops were consistent. In Autumn 2, we revisited the book 'Stuck' and worked on retelling the story. We also explored Remembrance Day through the poem, 'I am wearing a poppy today'. To finish off the term, we enjoyed writing instructions on how to catch Santa using the book, 'How to Catch Santa'. The children did a fantastic job of exploring the features of these different purposes of writing.
In Spring term, we wrote a diary entry from the point of view of the hen, in 'The Little Red Hen'. We then continued to explore traditional tales through reading and English, by moving on to the twisted tale, 'Mr Wolf's Pancakes' and Rapuzel to develop our comprehension skills. Through Mr Wolf's pancakes, we focused on grammatically correct sentences using the correct punctuation and began to extend and uplevel our sentences. We are looking forward to our first non-fiction writing, through a non-chronological report on sea creatures having been inspired by the book, Somebody Swallowed Stanley. We will then move on to setting descriptions through the wonderful book, The Tin Forest.
Maths
In Autumn term, year 1 explored the place value of numbers to 10. The children sorted objects into groups, represented numbers using manipulatives and explored the concepts of one more, one less, greater than, less than and equal to. Once solid in their understanding, we moved on to exploring addition and subtraction. In Autumn 2 we consolidated our learning on addition before moving on to subtraction. We finished the half term learning about 2D and 3D shapes - recognising and naming different shapes as well as sorting them, stacking them and generating patterns.
In Spring term, we extended our learning of place value and addition and subtraction by using numbers to 20. We looked at place value, looking closely at numbers 10-20, exploring the number of tens and ones each number has. We deepened our learning through reasoning and problem-solving challenges. We are looking forward to exploring place value within 50, noticing patterns in numbers using their tens and ones to explain. We will also looking at measurements, both length and height, as well as mass and volume before Easter.
History
Year 1 began their learning in History in Autumn 1 by exploring the concept of past and present, looking at a timeline of their lives so far. The children explored how they have changed over time and the sequence of events in their life. We explored our family trees and represented our families in this way, before looking at the family tree of King Charles III. The children did a fantastic job creating their own family trees, working with parents and grandparents, and using timelines throughout our learning.
In Spring term, we will continue our learning in history by exploring the changes in nursing over time, by learning about Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole, their role in the Crimean War and the impact they have had on nursing today. We enjoyed learning about these two fantastic women in history and comparing this with nursing today. We were excited to finish the topic with an interesting visit from two of our Y1 parents, two fabulous nurses who taught us about the importance of washing our hands and how they can help keep us safe and healthy.
We look forward to continuing our learning through History in the summer term.
Science
In Autumn 1, we learned about animals including humans in science, beginning with naming and labelling the parts of a human body. We then moved on to exploring our senses, naming the parts of the body they are linked to and looking at the parts of human and mammalian bodies. We then thought about the reasons that humans are mammals, including giving birth to live young, feeding babies milk, using lungs to breathe air, having hair/fur and many more.
Our Autumn 2 and Spring term learning in science was all about objects and their materials. We went on material hunts around the classroom and around school, identified different objects and the materials that they are made from. We have explored their different properties and carried out investigations to test these properties. We continued our learning on materials by exploring the properties of materials and worked towards carrying out a fair test to help us identify waterproof materials. We were challenged to create an umbrella that is waterproof for Incy Wincy Spider. We were very successful and applied our knowledge of materials to complete this challenge.
Geography
In Autumn term, we began our learning in Geography by learning about Worcester and our local area. We used a variety of different maps, identified key features including human and physical features as well as took a walk around Worcester to discover these. We had a great time on our walk, seeing Worcester Cathedral, The Guildhall, The Hive, the viaducts and Fort Royal Park. It's been great to learn about our local area and explain what makes Worcester a great place to live.
We will continue our learning in Geography term by exploring what is wonderful about the UK. We will look at the countries that make up the UK, their capital cities and explore the human and physical features of each country. We will end the topic by learning about the extreme weather we experience in the UK, including floods in Worcester.
Enrichment in Year 1
French Day! We created French flags, learnt French colours and numbers, ate croissants, built and sketched French monuments and crafted sunflowers from the famous sunflower fields in Provence which inspired Vincent Van Gogh. We invited grandparents in to support our learning on family trees, had nurses visit to support our history topic and are excited for forthcoming trips in the spring and summer terms. We are excited for World Book Day in March and all the fabulous costumes around school.
