Design and Technology
Design and Technology Intent
At Red Hill, Design and Technology aims to be an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Our design and technology curriculum is intended to:
- Give pupils the opportunity to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts in their world.
- Encourage the use of creativity and imagination throughout the design and technology processes.
- Enable children to acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.
- Equip children with the relevant, every day life skills that they will need by the end of year 6, e.g the principles of nutrition
Woodwork
Year 4 have been studying the different types of bridges and have designed and made their own wooden truss bridges.
The children practised their measuring and sawing technique to ensure their pieces were accurate in size and they were safe completing the activity.
Sewing
Our curriculum is designed to progress the skills in sewing so that by the end of Year 6, children are able to design and make their own waistcoats. The children start by sewing bookmarks and progress on to puppets, pillows and their own teddy waistcoats.
Cooking
Cooking is a life skill we encourage at Red Hill. Children explore cooking throughout their time in school to progress their skills in baking, cutting and cooking.
The Year 4 children have practised cutting up vegetables and designing and making their own bolognese recipe. This progresses to making a 2 course meal for their parents at the end of Year 6.
